Several people have asked the city council to start mailing out a newsletter again; unfortunately, the cost to do newsletters is more than we can budget for at this time. However, Chris Taylor, editor of The Connection, has offered us a great opportunity to get the word out through his publication. News items of community interest in the Bayou can be sent to aj5558@aol.com or you can call me at (251) 454-4417.
Mobile County Commissioner, Jerry Carl, attended the city council meeting on September the 8th. He spoke to the council about an opportunity to develop a Greater Bayou La Batre Area Fire District. Currently, the Bayou La Batre Fire Department services medical and fire calls in the police jurisdiction without compensation for services. Commissioner Carl encouraged residents in the outlying areas of Bayou La Batre to work together to collect 100 or more signatures on a petition requesting a referendum, which can then be brought before the Mobile County Commission for approval. The referendum would allow voters a chance to decide if they would support the development of such a fire district. The annual funds received will provide much needed resources for the BLBFD and hopefully, reduced insurance rates for homeowners. If you are interested in heading up this petition drive for the Greater Bayou La Batre area, please call: (251) 454-4417.
