Q: I’m ready to quit smoking. What over-the-counter products could I try to help me quit?
A: It’s great that you’re ready to quit smoking! Quitting will benefit your entire health, especially your heart and lung health. There are currently three types of over-the-counter products, called Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), which can help you quit: gum, lozenges, and patches. The nicotine in these products will help to reduce your withdrawal symptoms after you stop smoking. Some of these products may be better for you than others. Once daily skin patches are easier to use compared to gum and lozenges, which you must use often throughout the day in order for them to work properly. Once you choose a type of product, you need to pick the correct strength. The starting dose of gum and lozenges depends on how soon after waking you have your first cigarette, while the starting dose of patches depends on how many cigarettes you typically smoke per day. Your doctor or pharmacist can assist you in choosing the right product and can explain how best to use it. Also, if over the counter products do not work for you, your doctor may be able to prescribe medication to help you quit.
