Starting on Monday, January 9 at Grand Bay Post Office you will be able to apply for a United States Passport. Before this the closest places to apply for a passport was Moss Point Post Office and the Downtown Mobile Post Office. This makes it much more convenient for anyone that is wanting to take a trip beyond our borders. For U.S. citizens whose cruise embark or disembarks in a foreign country, including Canada, a passport is required. This includes day trips to the Caribbean Islands, Alaska’s White Pass, and the Yukon Railway train ride as long as it crosses a land or sea border into a foreign country. Passports also serve as a secondary picture identification that can be used as proof of identity.
Grand Bay Post Office serves as a walk-in location but the best way is to reserve a time between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Walk-ins can be served during regular hours which are, Monday thru Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The process is much easier if you already have the documents filled out and pictures taken. Passport pictures can be taken at any CVS or Walgreens Pharmacy. There are two types of Passports you can apply for; Passport Book and Card. The Card is valid only for return to the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. You can apply for both, but it is best to get the Passport Book. Standard processing fees are $135 total when applying for a Passport Book.
Here are the list of documents that you will need to apply for a Passport book.
– Evidence of U.S. Citizenship. This can be a U.S. Birth Certificate, Certificate of Citizenship, Certificate of Naturalization, or a fully valid undamaged U.S. passport.
