Here in Mobile the Spring is quickly turning into Summer. With the heat comes higher power bills because we are running the air conditioners more. We are always here to help and wanted to share a couple of tips with you on how to do some spring cleaning and cut down on those bills while extending the life of your HVAC system.
First and foremost is addressing your dirty filters. Make sure you are changing them every 30-60 days. We recommend the fiberglass filters. They are very inexpensive compared to some of the higher priced filters but they do need to be changed every 30 days. If using a higher-end filter with a high MERV rating be careful because for some HVAC systems it can create an added air flow restriction and cause fan motor and compressor issues along with making your system work harder pulling more amps thus increasing your power bill.
Second is keeping your drain clear from algae. The drain that runs from your inside unit to outdoors must be kept clean or it will get backed up and begin giving you problems with water draining inside and possible units freezing up. Take a cup of bleach and pour it down the drain pipe and wait 15 minutes. After that time period flush it If you have a heat pump system you want to do this every other month normally year round.
Lastly is the most forgotten of all maintenance issues on HVAC systems is cleaning the condenser coil outside. Be sure when cleaning it to not use a pressure washer because it may bend the fins and create more problems. A regular water hose with sprayer is fine to rinse the condenser out. Rinse from top to bottom and then side to side that way you clean the coil and the dirt comes down and cleans its way out. Cleaning the condenser could be a big difference in your power bill.
