The best option for disposing of unused medications is to immediately take it to a drug take back site or program. If you can not easily get to one or there is not one in your area, the FDA has published a list of drugs that can be safely flushed down the toilet on their website, www.fda.gov. For drugs that are not on the “flush list,” the following method is recommended:
Mix the medicine with dirt, litter, or used coffee grounds.
Place the mixture in a sealed container, like a plastic bag.
Dispose of the container in your trash at home.
Remove any personal information from the original medication packaging and dispose of it properly.
