Shingles is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus. It is the exact same virus that also causes chickenpox. It is more common in people 50 years old or older, but it may occur at any age. The best way to prevent the virus is by getting vaccinated. Shingrix® is the new vaccine of choice for prevention since it has been proven to more effective than older options. Even if you have received the older vaccines, it is still probably recommended to get Shingrix® for further protection.
