Citizens For A Better Grand Bay is proud to announce a very generous grant of $10,000 from the Sybil Smith Foundation of Mobile. The grant will be used toward the renovation of the Grand Bay State Bank building (c1913) for the Grand Bay Library & Museum.
When completed, the Grand Bay Library will be more than just books; it will be a state-of-the-art public library with museum venues highlighting the rich agricultural heritage of our area. The two-story brick building is one of the few historical buildings remaining in the Grand Bay area. It is located in the Historical District of Grand Bay at the corner of Potter Tract Road and Freeland Avenue.
Its first floor was used as a bank from 1913 to 1929, and as the Grand Bay Post Office from 1933 to 1975. Many residents remember piano recitals and meetings held in the 2nd floor Masonic meeting hall. The building was also the site of the El Cazador Museum, where gold from a Spanish treasure ship found in the Gulf of Mexico was reclaimed and exhibited. Renovation of the Grand Bay State Bank is just the start of the overall Historic District project, which includes the Albert Freeland Store and a community park.
